Luminous is a crowdfunding platform that allows individuals to help low income households afford safe and reliable solar lights.

Luminous agents operate in low-income communities to identify people in need of a safer light solution. These agents are respected members of their local community, such as a community leader, shop owner or church leader.

Once an agent has identified someone in need of a safer light they use the Luminous app to capture information about the person. This information is uploaded to the Luminous site, where donors can see their faces, read their stories and contribute to their light.

Donors can go on the website and contribute to any recipient of their choice. Once the total amount required for a solar light has been pledged, a unit will be installed at the recipients home, changing their life.

Key Challenges

Luminous needed a way to accurately capture information about the recipients and to have this information available on their website in the shortest time possible.

The Solution

A mobile app was built that enables an agent to capture the recipients’ information immediately once the recipient has been identified in need of a light. Because the app is on a mobile phone, the information can be captured anywhere, and it is available for uploading to the website without an agent first having to contact Luminous with the new information.

Impact

Luminous agents operate in low-income communities to identify people in need of a safer light solution. To date Luminous has enrolled 246 recipients, of which 225 have received solar lights.
